The question I get all the time: “I used the same colors they did in the magazine, why doesn’t it look the same?”
And simply put, there is one easy fix...and it's not how you apply the product either...
THE SOLUTION IS...
You must, must, MUST use eye primer.
WHAT IS PRIMER?
Eyeshadow primer is a cosmetic that is used to coat the eyelids prior to the application of eyeshadow so that the makeup can be applied in a smooth, even layer, and so that it will stay in place on the eyelid. So, you win twice with this product because not only will your makeup go on better, it will stay on longer! Your colors will be brighter and you can create smokey eyes with ease.
I can look at any woman’s eye makeup for two seconds and
tell you if she has primer on or not. That’s how much of a difference it makes.
Check out the examples below:
The great thing is that you can find inexpensive primers that work as well as department store brands. I myself am partial to NYX (retails $7), MAC (reatails $19), and Motives’ brands (retails $14).
A caveat though – some makeup lines will try to sell you primer in an array of colors, telling you that you can use them instead of eye shadow. And you can. However, if you plan to use eye shadow anyway, just get a neutral colored primer. It works under every single color.

Can you see the impact?
The eye with the primer is matte. The one without shows the makeup fighting with the oils from the eyelids.
