I am a people watcher. I've made up hundreds of faces in my career, and no matter where I am, or who I am looking at, I can always find something beautiful about each person I see.
Here are a few tips to help you feel comfortable in your own skin:
1) Forget about trends, and learn how to dress for your body type. Take some time, go to the mall, try stores you've never been in before. Put on outfits you would never dare to try, colors you never thought were "you". Find out what really works for you, and stick with those shapes. Ladies you know this: the right outfit can make you feel incredible!
Notice how this gal has on three different outfits, but they are all essentially the same shape/idea. She looks fantastic. She's working with her body, not against it:
2) Accept the fact that you are not and will never be perfect. Perfection is largely a myth. Almost every model I work with has something "different" about her face. Usually, she knows exactly what it is, and how to feature it, minimize it, or work with it. Giving yourself the okay to never look like a magazine cover (and even those girls don't look like that in person) is really quite freeing. Quit stressing over being an "ideal".
Lauren Hutton made an entire career out of her famous gap-toothed grin, and she's STILL going strong:
3) Remember that having a boyfriend/girlfriend/partner/husband is not a definer of whether or not you are worthy. Enjoy you! Get to know yourself and learn what makes you happy. When you're happy, you're smiling, and that in itself will make you feel better as a whole.
Solitude feels WAY better than being in a toxic relationship. There is just no way to feel good when you are surrounded by negative:
4) Respect yourself. Treat your body right. Whether it's relaxation, getting enough sleep, exercising, or putting healthy foods into it, treating your body as a gift will help you feel beautiful. Be sure to add in the little extras that make you feel fabulous: give yourself a manicure, try a new lip gloss color, spend some money on a great hair cut.
5) Give up life destroying habits. Smoking, drinking to excess, overeating - these things are not only "harmful" to your health, they are guaranteed to set you up for a difficult future. Not only will you spend a large part of your time feeling unwell, but you are wrecking your beauty from the inside out. If you do yourself one favor in life, quit these behaviors. Today.
